Foundation of College Writing

In this semester of Foundations of College Writing taught by Dr. Sherry, we learned different ways to take information gathered from different subjects and relay the information in different ways depending on the topic and intended audience. In my portfolio, I will show the progress I have made in my projects and connect them to the different goals that have been set. First, I wrote a research paper on how students should choose their major, then I took what I learned while doing my research paper and modified it to address students, families, and potential employers. For my final project I answered what I thought it was to be educated and I connected it my personal life experiences to why I felt that way.

Goal A. Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.

This goal means that we will be able to modify our info in ways that are appropriate to who is viewing it and why they are. I made these models for my Ear project, which is a project that we were assigned to learn different ways of taking information and changing them to address different audiences. For this goal I chose to focus on my Letter and my Flyer that I made to show different ways I can address a future employer and incoming students. I satisfied this goal by taking the information I gathered from doing the research paper for the CLUE project and making a flyer that would be directed towards students and a letter that would be used to address a future employer.
Below, I made a flyer for students who are entering college or are currently in college who have trouble selecting their academic major. I wrote a few guidelines that students could follow when choosing a major. I chose to make a flyer because I was able to get straight to the point and students would be able to follow it easier.

For my letter seen below, I chose to address my initial topic and I created the scenario of writing to my future employer about how he could help students with the difficult decision of choosing a major. I chose to use a letter to address this audience because it was the most formal model.

Goal B. Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
This goal means that we will be able to write and present information using the styles and rules of whatever form we are using. In the CLUE project I wrote about the various factors that influence a student's decision in choosing a major in college. The purpose of the CLUE project was to learn how use observation and research and write about the research that was found in a scholarly way of writing. I chose to use my CLUE project final as an example because it was the best model to show the work done to satisfy Goal B. In the research paper I took the research I found I transformed it into a paper that I used to address my audience of scholars by using the appropriate language in writing.

Goal C. Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
This goal means that students will be able to use many sources to gather information and use the information to support their point. In my Clue project I used research I found to support how people should choose their major and I made it clear using the three INs. We learned the three INs earlier in the semester and they are Introduce, Insert, and Interpret and ways to formulate better writing. The way I satisfied Goal C was by using my research and observation to write a paper that was well supported with the information I gathered.

Goal D. Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media print/non-print genres.
Goal D means that we will be able to read and create in multiple ways and forms. For my EAR project I was able to present the info from the paper and present it in different ways using my Flyer, Brochure, and Letter. The way I satisfied Goal D was by using the information I gathered in the CLUE project and modifying my presentation of information for each model. I chose to use my brochure as an example because I was able to interpret the information I gather and present it in a way separate from my research paper. In my brochure I address the students family and give them information to help them give their child help with choosing a major. I chose to use a brochure because it was the best way to relay a lot of information to parents and it was slight more professional than the flyer.

I also chose to use my flyer as an example because I was able to take the same information I had for my brochure and modify it to address my intended audience which was students and I was able to simplify the information I had before.

Goal E. Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
Goal E states that we will be able to make revisions to work both by themselves and with others. For my Clue and Tell project my drafts were outlines or skeletons what my final project eventually became. I collaborated with others to give and receive input on how to improve our work. My Tell project was our most recent project where we had to take all of the personal experience we earned inside and outside of class to answer the question of what I think a college education means. I satisfied this goal by doing peer work and getting help from the other students in the class on how to improve my work while giving them the same help. I chose to use my CLUE feedback as an example because I was able to take the help Dr. Sherry gave me and improve my final work.

I also chose my TELL draft checklist because I used the feedback Dr. Sherry gave me to improve my final paper.
